Professional help is available for you, your spouse or a loved one.
You do not have to figure this out alone. You may be wondering if you have a problem with sexual behavior, or you may be seeking help for some one that you care about. Either way, here are some things to consider:
• Mental health professionals believe that 5% to 8% of the population in the U.S. suffer from sexual addiction.
• The use of pornography, especially Internet pornography, is a common behavior for persons who struggle with these behaviors. Although the Internet does not create sexual addiction, it does provide the opportunity for behaviors that can become problematic and eventually lead to adverse consequences.
• Feelings of shame, despair and hopelessness are not uncommon experiences for persons with these behaviors.
• These behaviors are secretive and individuals who struggle may convince themselves that they can manage them on their own. Failed attempts at stopping the behaviors cause further despair and hopelessness for the person and committed partner.
• Often these behaviors are used to cope with personal problems or difficult feelings, provide escape and/or, to overcome boredom or anxiety.
• Mental health professionals think, with time, repeated behavior result in changes in brain chemistry similar to that of a chemically addicted person.
